How to Fix the Cold Spot in My House

how to fix cold spots in my house? Pikeville Spray Foam Insulation an help.

Every home has that one stubborn room: the bedroom that never warms up, the studio over the garage that feels drafty, or the living area with a cold band along the floor each winter. The root cause is usually air movement rather than a simple lack of insulation.

When outside air sneaks through cracks around top plates, recessed lights, and wall cavities—or when a crawl space or rim joist is leaking below—the room loses heat faster than the thermostat can keep up. The most reliable fix is to stop the air first and insulate at the same time, which is exactly what spray foam insulation is designed to do.

Start by thinking in three dimensions. Above a chilly room, attics often conceal the biggest leaks: wiring penetrations, plumbing stacks, open chases, and unsealed top plates. Sealing those pathways changes the way your house breathes by cutting the “stack effect” that pulls cold air down and pushes conditioned air out through the roof. Below a problem room, the rim joist around the perimeter of the floor system is another common culprit.

Closed-cell foam both seals and insulates this band, blocking drafts at their source while adding a durable, moisture-resistant barrier. If the room sits over a crawl space, addressing that area can deliver an outsized comfort boost; encapsulation plus targeted foam at the band joist removes the cold floor feeling and helps keep humidity and odors at bay.

Are My Windows Causing Drafts?

Even good windows can feel drafty if the surrounding wall assembly is leaking. Foam is the solution! Spray foam finds the hairline gaps you can’t see and locks them out, so the entire wall performs as an insulated system instead of a collection of parts. For metal buildings and garage bonus rooms, the same principle applies with higher stakes. Bare metal sweats and traditional batts struggle to control both heat transfer and air movement, which is why upgrading these spaces with foam often transforms them from seasonal to year-round usable.

We Fix Cold Spots in Your House

A typical cold-spot project with us begins with a walkthrough to trace likely air paths. When helpful, we can use a blower door and thermal imaging to visualize exactly where heat is escaping. Once we map the weak points, we air-seal and insulate the critical areas in one step, then confirm results and discuss whether your now-tighter envelope would benefit from small ventilation or HVAC adjustments.

You’ll usually feel the difference immediately.
