Do I Need New Insulation?

Old, dirty pink fiberglass insulation.

How to tell if your home’s insulation is falling short

Insulation doesn’t last forever. Over time, it can settle, sag, get damp, or simply lose its ability to keep your home comfortable. When that happens, your heating and cooling systems have to work harder just to maintain the same temperature—and you end up paying the price on your energy bills. Many homeowners don’t realize they need new insulation until they start noticing signs like cold spots, high humidity, or rooms that never seem to stay the right temperature.

You might also notice that certain rooms are always drafty or that your furnace and air conditioner seem to run constantly. Those are early warnings that your insulation isn’t doing its job. Other common red flags include musty smells from the attic or crawl space, condensation on walls or windows, or pests finding their way into insulation that’s old and loose. If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting your insulation checked by a professional.

What causes insulation to stop working?

Old insulation can wear out in a few ways. Fiberglass batts often slump over time or get compressed by foot traffic in the attic, which reduces their R-value—the measure of how well they resist heat. Cellulose can settle, leaving gaps at the tops of walls. In crawl spaces, moisture is a big problem; damp air can cause insulation to grow mold or attract pests. And if you’ve ever had a roof or plumbing leak, there’s a good chance the insulation nearby absorbed some of that water and lost its effectiveness.

Sometimes, insulation was never installed properly to begin with. Thin coverage, missing corners, or unsealed gaps around pipes and wires can all create cold bridges that allow heat to escape. We see this often in older homes built before modern energy standards. Even newer homes can have issues if insulation was rushed during construction. A simple inspection can tell you whether it’s time for a top-up or a complete replacement. Learn what a professional evaluation involves on our insulation services page.

The benefits of replacing old insulation

New insulation can make your home feel brand new. Temperatures stay steady, the air feels cleaner, and your HVAC system doesn’t need to run as long to keep up. Spray foam insulation, in particular, not only provides excellent R-value but also seals out drafts and moisture, which makes it an ideal upgrade. Once installed, spray foam doesn’t settle or lose performance over time. It creates a permanent barrier that locks in comfort and reduces allergens and dust entering from outside.

Replacing old insulation can also improve your home’s air quality. Moldy or contaminated materials can release spores and dust that circulate through your vents. By removing old insulation and replacing it with fresh material, you eliminate those pollutants and create a healthier environment for your family. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that upgrading insulation and sealing air leaks together can save up to 15% on heating and cooling costs annually.
